Pepe

About

Pepe the Frog is an internet meme consisting of a green frog with anthropomorphic features. It was originally created by an American artist and cartoonist Matt Furie in 2005 for his comic book Boy’s Club #1. The original form of Pepe the Frog was “Feels Good Man”.

After 2005, it’s popularity steadily grew across popular platforms such as Myspace, 4Chan, 8Chan and many others. Through the years, thousands of variations and remixes were born. By 2015, it became one of the most popular memes on the internet.

Pepe the Frog exploded into mainstream adoption during the infamous 2016 United States election where it became heavily associated with alt-right movements in the American media. On October 13th, 2015, Donald Trump even tweeted a Pepe representation of himself with a link to a Youtube video “You Can’t Stump the Trump (Volume 4)”, by Comrade Stump.

Some political controversy arose though the years following regarding Pepe and it as a representation for hate speech. Words were fired back and forth… with Pepe standing in the end.

Since the alt-right fiasco and Pepe’s mainstream entrance, it has become obvious that absolute majority of Pepe the Frog remixes are not bigoted in it’s nature and as such should be judged only in the context of the meme and not by the Pepe itself.

Message

When you have a meme as popular as Pepe the Frog, the message can move all over the place. Pepe initially began as a fun loving, laid back character without a care in the world and most Pepe memes still hold true to this persona. This is the general vibe people are going for when creating a Pepe meme to this day.

Although the message is generally positive with most Pepe memes, there have been many variations and deviations from the core concept of “feels good man”. The charisma of Pepe and the longevity of the meme has resulted in endless remixes of Pepe in different moods and predicaments. These days any point can be made using Pepe and the catalog of memes the internet has created over almost two decades.
